Library Update #42 (September 14, 2007)
Thomson Gale, publisher of three of the library's most popular, “Research Center” databases, has announced a new look and feel that will make it easier for users to find the information they want and to organize and use that information. The new look can already be found on the Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center . Buttons across the top of the search screen allow users to select basic or advanced search screens, or to search for information in specific publications.
The advanced option allows one to specify content that
includes images
that appears in peer-reviewed or academic journals
that contains statistics
that appears in primary sources
can be limited to a specific date or range of dates
In addition, OPRV continues to contain a “toolbox” that provides guidance to students on synthesizing the information they have located and integrating it into a coherent and credible report or term paper.
Toolbox topics include:
Tools for Getting Started
- How to Judge Information
- How to Make a Concept Web
- How to Choose a Topic
- How to Write a Topic Sentence
- How to Make an Outline
- How to Read and Interpret Graphs
Tools for Wrapping It Up
- How to Cite a Source
- How to Organize a Report
- How to Build an Argument
- How to Write a Conclusion
- How to Write a Thesis Statement
- How to Create Visual Representations of Data (charts, graphs, etc.)
- How to Footnote
Test drive the new interface now on Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center ; watch for it to appear in the other two Gale databases, Literature Resource Center and Health and Wellness Resource Center . To find them, point your browser to the library web page http://lib.lbcc.edu/ , click on “Articles and Databases” on the left side of the screen, then select the database you want to use.
