The Virtual Library Grows: E-Books at 11,300

With the recent addition of over 2700 new titles, LBCC Libraries now provide students with access to a total of 11,334 electronic books, about 8% of the library’s 137,000 total titles. Added convenience and versatility certainly are one reason to look into e-books; they provide 24/7 availability; they’re easy tp navigate, with links to contents and pages; portions can be saved, highlighted, saved, or printed,” said Paula Nielson, Systems Librarian and Library Webmaster. “Furthermore, when the L building remodel project gets underway at LAC in 2007, the library’s web-based books and journals will offer an alternative to the uncertainties and disruption of construction.”

Why would one want to view a book on a computer screen? Sitting at a workstation to read an entire book may not sound too inviting, but consider reading selections from a literary work, then moving immediately to critique what you’ve read in a Word document. Or easily extract a table or quotation and import it into a report or PowerPoint presentation. This kind of versatility is why students have warmed to LBCC’s virtual library.

What kinds of e-books are available? A full range of subject matter, including The Enhanced Occupational Outlook Handbook, Television and Child Development, Fight for Freedom and Other Readings on Civil Rights, SAMS Teach Yourself Javascript in 21 Days, Walt Whitman, and A Most Ingenious Paradox: the Art of Gilbert and Sullivan.
