Library Courses Boost Student Performance in Other Courses

Knowing how to identify, retrieve, evaluate and use information: these always have been skills students need to succeed in their classes and skills that librarians are best equipped to impart. In an era when print is being displaced rapidly by "virtual" information, and when new ideas can be disseminated instantly, research, once conducted by poring through books in the library, has taken on a whole new dimension. It's vital that LBCC students keep abreast of these developments, and this has been recognized in the information competency requirement that recently was mandated for graduation from all California Community Colleges.

Rising to this challenge, LBCC librarians have introduced two courses designed to instill and develop the technical and analytical skills they will need for their classes today and long into the future.

Library 1: Introduction to Libraries & Information Resources (new sections start March 15 at LAC and PCC!)

o A one-unit course teaching basic college-level research skills necessary to use print and digital information resources
o Emphasis is on research strategies and evaluation of sources

Library 3: Information Competency

o A three-unit course based upon information literacy standards developed by the Association of College and Research Libraries
o Designed to foster thought transformation, intelligent reasoning, and a new world view, including an appreciation of cultural diversity
o Transferable to UC/CSU campuses, and fulfills the Communication/Analytical Thinking requirement of Plan A for the general education for graduation from LBCC with an Associate Degree

Library 212: Web Law Resources (Web-based class begins March 15!)

o A one-unit course for the general community and students wishing to gain a competitive edge and upgrade job skills
o Hands-on introduction to free and subscription web law resources
