Need help? Ask a librarian

The Circulation Desk, located by the front entrance of Building L at the Liberal Arts Campus and the top floor of Building GG at the Pacific Coast Campus, is where library material is checked in and out.

In order to check out materials, students show their current college-services card. Alternatively, students may present a printout listing the courses in which they are currently enrolled, along with a photographic identification, such as a driver's license.

Students may check out up to 20 items at a time from the following types of circulating material:

  • books
  • magazines and journals
  • plays
  • pamphlets
  • annual reports
  • reserved items
  • audiobooks (tapes and CDs)
  • audio CDs
  • videos (VHS)
  • DVDs

Circulation Policies

In addition to posting our circulation policies, library staff members are available to explain them. Students may also telephone the Circulation Desk at (562) 938-4231.

Books and Plays circulate for three weeks, with one possible renewal. Students may check out as many as 20 books however, no more than 5 per subject. For example, a student could check out 5 books on Romantic poets, 5 books on algebra, 5 books on capital punishment, and 5 books on the American Revolution for a total of 20 books.

Individual issues of magazines and journals circulate for one week, with no renewal. Fines accrue on overdue issues at a cost of ten cents per day, per issue. Students may check out up to five items at a time with a limit of no more than two of any one title. For example, a student could check out only two issues of Time and two issues of Newsweek at a time.

Reserved items are shelved at the Circulation Desk, and students may check out two reserved items at a time. Circulation periods vary by instructor. We encourage students to return overdue items promptly to avoid fines, which accrue a cost of ten cents per hour on each overdue reserved item.

Pamphlets circulate for one week. Students may check out up to 10 pamphlets with a limit of 5 per subject.

Audiobooks, audio CDs, VHS videos and DVDs are also available for checkout. Since policies vary, students may consult library staff for current check-out periods and limits, or view the Circulation FAQ.

Remember!
Students are urged to return library materials on time in order to avoid fines and possible holds on grades, transcripts, and, in extreme cases, suspension of library privileges.
