There are two documentation systems recommended by The Chicago Manual of Style: the humanities system, which is used by scholars in the fields of literature, history, and the arts, and the author-date system, which is used by scholars in the physical, natural, and social sciences. The examples shown below are first cited according to the humanities system, and then in the author-date system.

Do not list articles from a well-known encyclopedia in the bibliography. Instead, cite the article in notes preceded by s. v. (sub verbo, "under the word") or refer to it in the text, as shown below.
