Searching for resources on poetry

The LBCC Library catalog is web-based and searchable via the Internet. From the library homepage, click on the link "Library Catalog". The Library's URL is :

http://lib.lbcc.edu

Use "Keyword" search or "Subject " search to browse the catalog. For example, you may use keywords such as: Vietnamese poetry, haiku, chansons de geste, and Beat poets, etc. Consult the Reference Librarian for suggestions of other topics.

Any one Library of Congress Classification Number (or Call Number) will not be inclusive of all books on the subject in this Library. Variances in the focus of books result in their being cataloged with different call numbers. For example, a search on the subject of "poetry" will show books with the following call numbers:

P - Literature
HQ - Sociology
BL-BX - Religion
N - Fine arts

The following list is not comprehensive of our resources on poetry. It is but a small sample of what LBCC Library owns. Please search the online catalog for the campus location and the availability of the item.

Searching for poetry resources on the Internet

Use a Search Engine such as Altavista (http://www.altavista.com) when you know the exact terms or names of your topic.

  • Enter two or more related words, each with a + in front of it to specify your search.
  • Search for phrases by putting double quotes around two or more words, for example:
    • +"Vietnam war"+poetry
    • +"harlem renaissance"+poets
  • Put an asterisk * after the root word to find plurals or other words beginning with the root, for example: comput* will bring articles with words computer, computers, computing.
  • Use subject directories such as Yahoo (http://www.yahoo.com) or Internet indexes such as Librarian’s Index to the Internet (http://www.lii.org) for browsing or when you are not sure of the terms or names. Indexes lead you from the general subject to the specific sub-topic.
