A hands-on introduction to Web health resources, this course acquaints students with health resources available on the World Wide Web and via subscription databases. This course is beneficial for the general community, healthcare professionals, and students in various disciplines such as nursing and allied health, human services, child development and early childhood education, who wish to expand their specialty knowledge base in order to gain a competitive edge and upgrade their job skills.
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to:
1. Identify browser interface components in order to navigate the Web.
2. Use online health reference tools to find medical and pharmaceutical information.
3. Compare medical subject directories.
4. Use Web sites for specific diseases and condition to locate related information and medical procedures.
5. Criticallyselect and evaluate medical and health resources from the Internet.
6. Cite Web resources according to appropriate documentation styles.
7. Capture a Web document.
8. Develop an effective search strategy on a given topic.Course Organization:
The course is divided into nine modules. Each module corresponds to one week (2 classroom hours) in the college semester. The modules are as follows:
1. Introduction to the Internet, browser and e-mail.
2. General medical gateways
3. Medical directories
4. Medical dictionaries and encyclopedias.
5. Diseases and conditions.
6. Drug information
7. Wellness and mental health.
8. Healthcare careers
9. Subscribed online Web health resources.
There will be no textbook required in this class All course readings will either be handed out in a class or can be obtained from the Internet and Library's databases .
Participation:
Attendance
will be taken at each class. If you have to miss a class due toan
emergency, please let me know as soon as possible. After the2nd
unexcused absence, I will begin subtracting 5 pointsfrom your
Attendance/ Active learning score for every absence.There are
9 weekly meetings. You will get 20 points for each dayyou are
present in class.
Assignments:
This
is a hands-on class. Every meeting, you will have tasks that mustbe
completed in class. There will be demonstrations on how todo required
tasks. The purpose of the demonstration is to acquirethe skills
in doing the required tasks. There will be assignmentsto show
that you have worked independently and have learned theexpected
skills. Any class tasks that have not been completedmust be
submitted on Tuesdays, the following week. Therewill be
a 5-point deduction on every late paper. You couldleave them
at the circulation desk in the Library. This will allowme to check
your work and be able to give them back on the nextclass meeting.
Each assignment will have a grade value of 30 points.
Class
Mid-term project:
You will submit a listing of resources from the
topic you have chosen.You will get a 100-point credit for this.
Final
Examination:
You
will be assigned a topic to search on. You will be askedto find
sources of information for your topic.You willbe asked to cite
the sources you found. You will get 100-pointcredit for this.
Extra
credit:
You will be allowed to select your own topic of
research. There willbe a class list from which you can select
too. The list can beused to help you decide which topic to work
on. You will get 50 extra points as soon as you submit your topic.
If you submit yourtopic after the third class meeting, you loose
your extra credit.If you change your topic, you loose the extra
credit.
This course is offered on a credit/no credit basis only. Allwork must be completed with 70% accuracy to receive creditfor the course. If you get less than 70% accuracy on an assignment the instructors will work with you individuallyto correct any deficiencies.
